Rug size and placement for king & queen beds

The rug is the quietest decision in a bedroom and the one most often sized wrong. Too small and the bed floats; too large and the room loses its edges. Here is how we size and place rugs in every quiet-luxury bedroom we render.

The short answer

Three placements that always work

1. Two-thirds under the bed
The most forgiving layout. Slide the rug until it starts just below the nightstands. The front legs of the bed sit on it, the headboard wall stays clean, and you get a soft landing on both sides and at the foot.
2. Fully under, nightstands included
Reserved for larger rooms. Keep at least 12 inches of rug visible beyond the nightstands and 18 inches of bare floor between the rug edge and the walls, so the room still reads as a room and not as wall-to-wall carpet.
3. Flanking runners
When the floor plan will not take a 9x12, use a pair of 2.5x8 runners on each side of the bed. Cheaper, easier to clean, and quietly correct in a narrow room.

Choosing the rug itself

Quiet luxury lives in texture, not pattern. A hand-loomed wool in ivory, oatmeal or a soft mocha will sit comfortably beneath white oak, travertine and brushed brass.
